                            Welcome to La Spirit Radio!      After eight years in radio I've decided to change the name of my radio show " The LW Experience Sunday Classics" which started in the summer of 2005.  About six months ago "La Spirit Radio" was created.       Today everything is moving and changing at such a rapid pace.  No one has the time to really TAKE  TIME and listen to each other let alone listen to music like we use to.  Remember when listening to the radio was a highlight of the day?  Alot of people don't even listen to their local radio stations anymore, they listen to their ipods, or a station  online like XM/Sirius.   Back in 2010 things were changing at the radio station, due to budget constraints they let go of the paid music director who was also working as the radio station manager.  Some other behind the scene events ha...

      Black History Month kicked off in a very sad and somber way with the announcement of Don Cornelius passing.  You can't celebrate Black History Month without mentioning music and Don Cornelius played a major role in black history music.  The year was 1971 when Soul Train aired across the country.  I was ten going on eleven years of age at that great time in music history.  Don Cornelius, creator and host of soul train, was known for his hip dress style, his coolness along with a baritone voice.  One of his famous rap lines at the end of the show "we wish you love, peace and soul" will always be upon the lips of many.               Soul Train came on Saturday mornings around 11:00am.  My siblings and I would make sure our chores for the weekend were done, that's right CHORES, we had them back then.  After that it was all soul train, funky music and dancing.  The show aired once a week so we ...

          The Soul Train Awards honored Earth Wind & Fire along with Miss Gladys Knight. I've been waiting for that to happen for such a long time, the honoring of EWF that is. When I first started doing radio in 2005, my first show was dedicated to Earth Wind & Fire. There was no way that I could play any other songs until I payed tribute to a group that shaped my life. I had to bless the Mic, by saluting all those that came before me and influenced me. Now, to the award show. The award show aired on both BET and Centrex networks.           Due to the unexpected death of Heavy D, an additional tribute was added. Legendary hip hop artists came out to support, Naughty by Nature, Big Daddy Kane, Curtis Blow, Dougie Fresh and the Goodie Mob.           The new documentary Michael Jackson "The Life Of An Icon" is a must see. I always wanted to see a documentary that would compare to the classic movie, The Jackson's "An American Dream" . The movie adaptation was excellent and rang very true to me. The casting for the movie was dead on; the documentary shows early pictures of Katherine Jackson, and Angela Bassett resembles the young Katherine. Family members Katherine and Tito Jackson appear in this work and narrates for us. The documentary sheds light on the music industry as it was back in those days; the seventies and the eighties, still very segregated.             What I found to be interesting was the story behind Bobby Taylor, the one who discovered the Jackson Five and Berry Gordy, the president of Motown.           I just heard on the news that classic rapper Heavy D has died. I was completely shocked from hearing that news because he performed on the 2011 BET Awards. His performance was very good, he appeared to have lost some weight and he was doing his classic dance moves. When rap music hit the scenes back in the day, I really did not care for it. It was only acts like Heavy D and the Boyz who would get my attention because of the sampling of funky tracks and r&b tracks.           There were a few artists whose cd's I purchased on a regular basis, and Heavy D was one of those acts.
