A Special Tribute Honoring Earth Wind & Fire

The Soul Train Awards honored Earth Wind & Fire along with Miss Gladys Knight. I've been waiting for that to happen for such a long time, the honoring of EWF that is. When I first started doing radio in 2005, my first show was dedicated to Earth Wind & Fire. There was no way that I could play any other songs until I payed tribute to a group that shaped my life. I had to bless the Mic, by saluting all those that came before me and influenced me. Now, to the award show. The award show aired on both BET and Centrex networks.
Due to the unexpected death of Heavy D, an additional tribute was added. Legendary hip hop artists came out to support, Naughty by Nature, Big Daddy Kane, Curtis Blow, Dougie Fresh and the Goodie Mob. Gladys Knight left us with a heart felt song performed with BeBe Winans after accepting her award. None of the original Pips were there but artists David Hollister, and Kenny Lattimore performed as honorary Pips for the night. The EWF tribute was nice, performances by Lelah Hatahaway singing Love's Holiday. Her voice is amazing, sultry, and sexy.
Bootsie Collins playing bass, Cee-lo Green, Robin Thicke doing their thing on vocals. Three of the original members were present to accept the award. Verdine White was present along with Philip Bailey. Maurice White was not present but was definety mentioned as the driving force that started it all. I was introduced to EWF in the seventies, the time when music was so influential to many of us. I was a teenager during that decade. The country, and the world was changing. People were changing, finding out who they were. Earth Wind and Fire was around during the right time when everything was changing in the world and taking new form.
I watched an interview with Philip Bailey , he was saying that during that early period, the band was definitely feeling and receiving a spiritual presence from a higher source. He clearly realizes that it was not them alone that was creating this magic. Earth Wind & Fire wrote about life, love, spirituality, God. Their music has always been so uplifting and positive. They taught us how to Be, they taught us that we were all stars, spirit, children of god. I will always cherish those memories of seeing them in concert and just being amazed by the energy that they projected in their performances. I listen to Earth Wind & Fire still today, matter of fact, everyday.
Check out some of the Earth Wind & Fire episodes that I'll be putting together on my radio show. Attached is the first episode, please enjoy and pass the word!! This is my tribute to a band that changed my life and many lives!! Thank you so much Earth Wind & Fire for sharing your gifts with us!!

Helen Bruner and Terry Jones : 2nd Overture

Super producers Helen Bruner and Terry Jones ( The Voices ) are riding high on the success of their new album 2nd Overture.  The new single “I Can't Call It” has been climbing the R&B charts.  The album was written and produced by both ladies with Helen playing most of the musical parts. The album represents a new turning point in their lives and is dedicated to both of their Mothers who played pivotal roles in their lives and musical careers. Both of the ladies have experienced the loss of their mothers who were dear to them.   " In essence, it is as if we are starting over with a different heart and mind creatively, not having my mom as an anchor - hence the title 2nd Overture", Bruner states.   The album has eleven tracks that dive into the topics of life, love, relationships and how to recover from the circumstances and changes that life brings to us.  Helen Bruner and Terry Jones are nominated for two Soul Track 2023 awards.  Album Of the Ye...

Jay Hoggard: Raise Your Spirit Consciousness Album Review

American jazz vibraphonist and composer Jay Hoggard is raising the spiritual consciousness with songs such as; Holy Spirit Consciousness, Peace To You My Children, Worship God in Spirit Truth and Love on Raise Your Spirit Consciousness album.  Raise your spirit consciousness has eight original compositions from Hoggard as well as recreations of original classics by Wayne Shorter, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder and Thad Jones. Affirming with an Amen from Hoggard at the end of the song.  " Peace To You My Children " enters with a  high energy drum riff that leads into a soprano saxophone collaboration with the vibraphones which is electrifying.  Nat Adderly Jr. has a beautiful piano solo. Ends with a bang!...

Jazz Guitarist Calvin Edwards, A New Outlook On Life

Jazz guitarist Calvin Edwards, born in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, now spends most of his time in the state of South Carolina surrounded by his family. "My father, Hiawthia Edwards, was a pretty famous gospel singer" explains Edwards. At seventeen years of age he started out professionally with his father.  While playing in his brother's band, The Jett Edwards Band, the brothers recorded two albums together. Edwards was a member of the original Five Blind Boys of Alabama. "After seeing me perform, they wanted me to play with them. I was with them for four or five years." says Edwards.  Calvin has lived in Japan for over fifteen years during his career. "The people come out more to enjoy music, and it is pretty pricey. They have a safer nightlife, crime is less than over in the states. The people will go out if it means they will be safer", explains Edwards about the jazz scene when he was in Japan.  In July 2000, The Calvin Edwards Trio perfo...
