The new documentary Michael Jackson "The Life Of An Icon" is a must see. I always wanted to see a documentary that would compare to the classic movie, The Jackson's "An American Dream". The movie adaptation was excellent and rang very true to me. The casting for the movie was dead on; the documentary shows early pictures of Katherine Jackson, and Angela Bassett resembles the young Katherine. Family members Katherine and Tito Jackson appear in this work and narrates for us. The documentary sheds light on the music industry as it was back in those days; the seventies and the eighties, still very segregated.
What I found to be interesting was the story behind Bobby Taylor, the one who discovered the Jackson Five and Berry Gordy, the president of Motown. For years everyone thought that Diana Ross discovered the group, that was only due to the marketing strategy of Berry Gordy. Bobby Taylor was the one who discovered the Jackson Five, and this documentary discusses his role with the group. It has been said that Bobby Taylor never received the recognition he deserved. During those Motown early years it was Bobby Taylor who worked closely with the group, Michael especially.
Berry did not approve of the direction that Bobby was taking the group, so he had "The Corporation" come in and write a ton of hits for them. Some of Motown's Hottest acts appear in this documentary lending their stories and fondest memories of the young Michael Jackson. We all know that Michael's work ethic was incredible, he studied all of the greats that came before him. He knew what it took and what it meant to become great in his field. In my mind June 25TH 2009 was the day that changed music as it is today.
So many artists grew from the work of MJ, so many wanted to be like him. Most of today's dance moves have originated from MJ. MJ was creativity at it's best. This documentary is a good body of work, nicely done by a good friend of Michael, David Gest. I give it a Five Star rating right along the Five Star rating for the man himself, Micheal Jackson.
